Varicose Veins
Description: Enlargement of superficial veins in the legs that result from problems with valves in the veins. A normal leg vein has a trap-door-like valve about every three inches that prevents backflow of blood in the vein when the individual is erect. If these valves become incompetent, pressure in the veins increases and the vein becomes larger.
Incidence: Common (about twenty percent of American adults)
Prevalence: Most common among middle-aged females with family history of varicose veins; also common in people who are obese; also more common in women after pregnancy
Signs and symptoms:
- Curvy, bulging, large veins in the legs
- Leg cramps or aching
- Fatigue
- Swelling of the legs
Risk factors:
- Lots of standing
- Wearing restrictive clothing
- Pregnancy
Usual treatment:
- Rest periods with legs elevated
- Light elastic stockings
- Avoid restrictive clothing
- Medications injected at the site
- Surgery
Usual course: Chronic and persistent throughout a lifetime. Uncontrolled, the condition can lead to permanent enlargement of the legs and leg ulcers. The most effective method of treatment is use of adequate support hose (stockings must fit tightly). In many cases, compliance is poor and the diseases progresses.
Spiritual Considerations:
· The disorder can affect the person’s self-image because of the obvious physical changes in the legs. Promote a positive self-image by emphasizing the person’s strengths.
· In older adults, wearing support hose and resting often with the legs elevated is preferred to surgery or vein stripping. Thus, the person may have to learn to live with this problem. Offer continued emotional support.
Suggested scriptures: 1 Samuel 16:7; Isaiah 26:3-4
