Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE)
Description: SLE is a chronic disorder of the immune system that may affect organs throughout the body. In this disease, the body develops antibodies that assault healthy tissues- especially the lungs, heart, kidneys, brain, skin, and joints.
Incidence: Notuncommon (two million Americans)
Prevalence: Females
Signs and symptoms:
  • Achy joints
  • Arthritis
  • Fatigue
  • Fever (more than 100° F)
  • Skin rashes
  • Anemia
  • Kidney damage
  • Pain in the chest on deep breathing
  • Rash on face
  • Light or sun sensitivity
  • Hair loss
  • Reynaud’s phenomenon
  • Seizures
  • Mouth or nose ulcers
Risk factors:
  • Female gender
  • Heredity
  • Environmental factors
Usual treatment:
  • Rest
  • Stress management
  • Avoid direct sunlight
  • Balanced diet
  • Medications
  • Psychotherapy and family therapy
  • Self-help group
Usual course: Long-term (mild to severe)

  • SLE affects the entire family.
