Prevention and awareness are key essentials in maintaining our physical bodies.  Many resources may be found here including:  statistics, demographics, and basic health regulations to assist you in a lifelong journey of whole health focusing on the first component of wholeness, the body.  The health and faith resources found on this site combined can bring balance between our body, soul (mind, will and emotions) and spirit.  Learn more about the continuum of care in whole health while increasing your faith, utilizing wisdom, and bringing wholeness to your overall being, body, soul and spirit.

Wondering how you can be more health conscious and are unsure where to start?  You can check the National Health Observances calendar and see how you and your congregation celebrate health and honor those you love by making them aware of resources and agencies that provide support and materials to help you succeed!

Focus on health observances throughout the year.

Timely Topics:

Here's how to fight the "flu"...

Use this guide to discover the most common causes of the most common symptoms for your illnesses...

Stroke (also called Cerebrovascular Accident (CVA) or Brain Attack)

Description:  An interruption in the blood supply to the brain caused by blocking of an artery, or rupture of the blood vessel in the brain that causes bleeding into the tissue

Incidence:  At least 500,000-600,000 new cases each year in the US

Prevalence:  Males more than females until menopause, then nearly equal: risk increases with age

Signs and symptoms:
  • Headache
  • Numbness or tingling in face or extremities
  • Weakness or paralysis on one side of body
  • Slurred speech
  • Visual deficits
  • Dizziness
  • Loss of consciousness
Risk factors:
  • Advanced age
  • High blood pressure
  • Heart disease
  • Smoking
  • Diabetes
  • Heredity
Usual treatment:
  • Medication (clot-busting medication may be given for stroke caused by a clot, but only within a tree-hour window from onset symptoms, so early treatment is essential)

  • Surgery (if indicated for blockage or hemorrhage)

  • Rehabilitation (for reeducation and training)

  • Lifestyle modifications (lose weight, stop smoking, control high blood pressure, reduce or eliminate alcohol intake)
Usual course:
  • Recovery time varies (depending on location and severity of the stroke); stroke may leave long-lasting effects.  The effects of stroke may vary from complete recovery of function to permanent paralysis to coma or death-again, depending on the location and extent of damage within the brain.
Spiritual considerations:
  • People may be left with severe physical and cognitive deficits that require an extensive period of rehabilitation

  • Stroke affects the entire family

  • Stroke survivors report that prayer, faith, hope, positive thinking, and humor are good coping strategies
Suggested scriptures: Psalms 103:5; Philippians 4:13
