Strep Throat (Streptococcal Pharyngitis)

Description:  Infection of the throat caused by a bacterium called streptococcus, with acute onset. Twenty percent of persons with strep throat will have sore throat, fever, beefy red throat and white coating to the tonsils. The remainder of persons may have no symptoms except fever or mild sore throat, or have nonspecific symptoms such as headache, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, or fast heart beat. Cough laryngitis, and stuffy nose are not usual symptoms.

Incidence:  Common; especially among children ages six to twelve

Prevalence: 
Males equally with females

Signs and symptoms:
  • Red  and sore throat
  • Enlarged lymph nodes in the neck
  • White patches on tonsils
  • Headache
  • Fever
  • Aches
  • Upset stomach and vomiting
Risk factors:
  • Age (children)
  • Close social proximity (families, schools, childcare centers)
Usual treatment:
  • Medication (antibiotics-usually for at least ten days)
  • Acetaminophen (Tylenol)
Usual course: Usually clears within days with appropriate treatment; left untreated, strep throat can result in serious injury to other organs later, such as the heart and kidneys.
