Seizures (also called Seizure Disorders or Epilepsy)
Description: Seizures are alterations in consciousness or neurological function related to abnormal electrical impulses in the brain. There are several types, including epilepsy, numerous possible causes. However, fifty percent of all cases are of unknown cause.
Incidence: Common (1.5 million in the US experience seizure)
Prevalence: Males equally with females; occurs in all age groups
Signs and symptoms:
- Vary, depending on type but may include
- Muscle contractions
- Loss of consciousness or altered consciousness
- Being unaware of surroundings
- Fever (in younger children)
- Headache
- In severe cases, breathing may stop
Risk factors:
- Certain brain disorders
- Head injury or stoke
- Genetics
- Low blood sugar
- High fever
- Infections
- Use of certain drugs
Usual treatment:
- Medication (anticonvulsants and medications to treat the cause)
- Monitoring
Usual course: Varies, depending on the type. First line drug therapy eliminates seizures in 1/3. For those patients whose seizures are not controlled with first line medications, more complex medications are available. The first line drugs have fewer side effects and require less monitoring than the complex medications and therefore are preferred.
Spiritual considerations:
- A condition called status epilepticus (repeated seizures that go on for a long period of time) is a medical emergency. Seek emergency treatment.
- This is a scary condition. If someone in your congregation has epilepsy or problems with seizures, educate your staff and congregation on how to help. Encourage the person to comply with treatment, as medications can help control seizures in most cases. Have an emergency plan in place.
- Provide hope that this problem can be controlled with proper treatment. Address fears and anxiety. Strengthen spiritual support systems.
