Schizophrenia
Description: Schizophrenia is often a chronic and severe mental illness that affects the function of the brain. This disabling brain disease involves periods of psychosis, hallucinations and delusions, and alterations in behaviors.
Incidence: Not Common (one percent of the US population, 2.7 million Americans)
Prevalence: Males equally with females
Signs and symptoms:

Hallucinations (false sensory information, especially hearing voices)

Delusions (false fixed personal beliefs)

Emotionally-dulled responses

Inappropriate emotions

Bizarre behavior

Disorganized speech

Withdrawal

Impaired relationships
Risk factors: Heredity, including neurological abnormalities of the brain
