Psoriasis
Description: A common, chronic, recurrent, scaly rash of unknown cause that may involve only a small area of the body or may be widespread. The patches are well demarcated and thickened. Psoriasis often involves the scalp. In severe cases, inflammatory arthritis may be seen along with it.
Incidence: Common (1,000-2,000 per 100,000 people in the US)
Prevalence: Males equally with females; especially seen in late teens/early twenties and age fifty-seven to sixty.
Signs and symptoms:
- Itchy skin
- Arthritis (in more severe cases)
- Dry, scaly patches on top of red skin
- Mostly seen on the scalp, knees, and elbows
Risk factors:
- Skin irritation
- Infection
- Stress
- Hormonal changes
- Drinking alcohol
Usual treatment:
- Medication (usually topical, but immunosuppressives used in some cases)
- Special baths and shampoos
- Other treatments for itchiness
Usual course: Usually improves with proper treatment but can be more serious in certain persons; there is no cure, and the disease tends to be episodic and unpredictable; may recur in the winter with decreased exposure to sunlight; the earlier the age of onset, the more severe the disease.
Spiritual considerations:
This condition is not contagious, but may look disturbing to others. Assure the person and congregational members that treatment usually helps.
Provide comfort and calm presence during flare-ups when the person may feel fear and anxiety.
