Parkinson’s Disease (PD)

Description:  A slowly progressive degenerative central nervous system disorder characterized by slow movements, muscle rigidity, resting tremor, and gait instability.  There is a depletion of dopamine in the brain, but the cause is unknown. 
Incidence:  Common (more than one million in US; 50,000 new cases per year; one in every 100 persons after age fifty-five

Prevalence:  Males more than females

Signs and symptoms:

  • Stiffness (rigidty)
  • Slowness of movement (bradykinesia)
  • Tremor
  • Depression
  • Dementia
  • Gait disturbances
  • Bladder and sexual dysfunction
Risk factors: Unknown

Usual treatment:
  • Medication (that provides chemical dopamine to the brain)
  • Support/education
  • Surgical intervention (to destroy areas of the brain that cause muscle rigidity)
  • Fetal tissue implants have shown some success in reducing spasticity and rigidity
Usual course: A chronic disorder with no cure; can ultimately lead to being bedridden and death

Spiritual considerations:

  • Disease is progressive and associated with continued feelings of sorrow.
  • Family and person may be grieving multiple losses-offer comfort.
  • Family and especially spouse or caregiver will require long-term spiritual and emotional support.
  • Medication management is lifelong, and the person with PD is quite dependent on medication to maintain physical activity
