Otitis Media (Middle Ear Infection, also called Earache)

Description:  Otitis Media is a bacterial or viral infection in the middle ear that usually occurs after a cold or other upper respiratory infection.

Incidence:  Common; mostly in young children (three months to three years)

Prevalence:  Males

Signs and symptoms:
  • Ear pain and/or pressure
  • Temporary hearing loss
  • Irritability
  • Fever
  • Tugging at ear(s)
  • Fluid coming from ear
Risk factors:
  • Frequent respiratory infection
  • Male gender
  • Exposure to childcare
  • Exposure to tobacco smoke
  • Bottle-fed
  • Siblings with history of ear infections
  • First infection before age four months
Usual treatment:
  • Medication (antibiotics-take complete course of medication)
  • Pain reliever
  • Surgery (often needed to provide continuous drainage to the middle ear to prevent accumulation of fluid, also called “tubes in the ear”)
Usual course: Usually clears up in a few days with appropriate antibiotic therapy; though hearing loss and permanent damage to the ear drum could result with continued or untreated infection.
