Prevention and awareness are key essentials in maintaining our physical bodies.  Many resources may be found here including:  statistics, demographics, and basic health regulations to assist you in a lifelong journey of whole health focusing on the first component of wholeness, the body.  The health and faith resources found on this site combined can bring balance between our body, soul (mind, will and emotions) and spirit.  Learn more about the continuum of care in whole health while increasing your faith, utilizing wisdom, and bringing wholeness to your overall being, body, soul and spirit.

Wondering how you can be more health conscious and are unsure where to start?  You can check the National Health Observances calendar and see how you and your congregation celebrate health and honor those you love by making them aware of resources and agencies that provide support and materials to help you succeed!

Focus on health observances throughout the year.

Timely Topics:

Here's how to fight the "flu"...

Use this guide to discover the most common causes of the most common symptoms for your illnesses...

Migraines

Description:  A severe headache that may last from hours to days and is caused by sudden dilation of arteries in and around the brain.  These headaches are episodic and can be triggered by allergies, stress, fatigue or even certain foods.  They may be generalized or just on one side of the head.

Incidence:  Females more than males in adults

Prevalence:  May start in childhood and continue through adult-hood

Signs and symptoms:
  • Irritability
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Visual disturbances
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Dizziness
  • Muscle soreness
Risk factors:
  • Family history
  • Alcohol
  • Emotional stress
  • Young age
  • Female
  • Menstrual cycle
  • Certain eating habits
  • Emotional stress
  • Allergies
Usual treatment:
  • Sleep (lying down in a clam, dark, quiet place)

  • Cold cloth to head or neck

  • Avoid foods that may cause symptoms

  • Avoid stress

  • Medications (prompt use of vasoconstrictor medications may stop the migraine and should be continuously available)

  • Usual course: Most symptoms go away within seventy-two hours; as a person gets older, attacks are usually less frequent and not as severe.
Spiritual considerations:
  • People sometimes judge those with migraines as having emotional rather than physical problems.

  • Avoid judgmental attitudes about the cause of a person’s migraines, and realize these severe headaches can be disabling to them.

  • Provide compassion and understanding; teach congregational members to do the same.

  • Instill hope that there is treatment and that attacks do pass.
Suggested Scriptures: Psalms 23
