Menopause
Description: Menopause occurs when the ovaries no longer manufacture estrogen and is natural consequence of aging. Menopause is considered to be complete when twelve consecutive menstrual periods have been missed. Menopause may occur abruptly when the ovaries are surgically removed.
Incidence: relatively common (25,000 new cases each year in the US)
Prevalence: Common (36 million American women); usually happens between ages forty-five and sixty
Signs and symptoms:
- Hot flashes and night sweats
- Disrupted sleep
- Fatigue
- Increased sweating
- Mood swings
- Vaginal dryness
- Thinning and decreased elasticity of skin
- Urinary incontinence
- Loss of, or decrease in, sex drive
Risk factors:
- Age
- Surgical removal of ovaries
Usual treatment:
- Hormone replacement therapy
- Increase of soy products in diet
Usual course: Many women become menopausal without any symptoms and others have symptoms. Many psychoemotional changes are attributed to menopause such as mood shifts
