Meningitis
Description: A potentially life-threatening infection of the brain and spinal fluid that can be caused by bacteria or a virus. Meningitis is transmissible from one person to another and may be epidemic. The most severe form is caused by a specific bacterium.
Incidence: Depends on type; bacterial: three to ten cases per 10,000; viral: more than 10,000 cases per year
Prevalence: Males equally with females; viral is most common in young adults; bacterial is most common in those with weakened immune systems, infants, elderly; Navajo Indian and American Eskimo may be more susceptible to bacterial type
Signs and symptoms:
- Fever
- Headache
- Stiff neck
- Nausea and vomiting
- Occasional rash
- Risk factors:
- Impaired immune system
- Epidemics (where the bacteria become much stronger by infecting people)
Usual treatment:
- Medications (appropriate antibiotics for the bacterial type)
- Hospitalization
- Rest
Usual course: Good prognosis with proper treatment, though there is a risk of death even with treatment; with viral type, recovery is usually complete within days to one week; however, the bacterial disease can progress very rapidly, leading to death within forty-eight hours from onset, so early diagnosis and treatment are essential.
Spiritual considerations:
- Viral meningitis is becoming more common on college campuses. This is a scary diagnosis for any parent of a child to hear, but provide hope that with prompt treatment, it is generally short-term.
- Provide comfort and a healing presence for the person and family while treatment is being administered.
- Prayer and fostering hope are most appropriate while waiting for improvement.
Suggested scriptures: Psalms 57:1; James 1:1-5
