Infertility

Description:
Infertility is the failure to achieve pregnancy despite a couples efforts.  How long a couple may try to conceive before doctors determine infertility varies, most specialists saying as little as one year, but others say as many as five.  On average, ovulation occurs twelve times per year (once per month).  The period of fertility for each cycle may be four to five days or less, and so a woman may not become pregnant simply because the couple misses the fertile period.  But when a number of periods have occurred without resulting in pregnancy, infertility is considered to exist.  There are many causes of infertility:  the most common causes are insufficient sperm count, failure to ovulate, or disease of the fallopian tubes that provides a barrier and prevents the sperm from meeting the egg.

Incidence:
Common (six million Americans; ten percent of the population at reproductive age)

Prevalence:
Equally among males and females

Signs and symptoms:
  • One of unprotected intercourse without conception
Risk factors:
  • Smoking
  • Alcohol and drugs
  • Environmental toxins
  • Pesticides
  • Lead
  • Female hormone imbalance
  • Blocked fallopian tubes
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease
  • Endometriosis
  • Severe medical illnesses (mumps
  • STD (sexually transmitted disease)
  • Injury to testicles or impaired function
  • Diabetes
Usual treatment (depends on cause):
  • Medications (to stimulate ovulation)
  • Surgery
  • Utilize reproductive technologies to relieve problems in the reproductive process, such as failure to ovulate, blocked tubes or low sperm count.
Usual course: Varies; some infertility problems are permanent.  However, every effort to identify the cause should be made so that pregnancy can be achieved.

Spiritual considerations:
  • This situation may cause strain in a marital relationship; discuss ways partners can support each other.

  • Be aware that the couple may experience isolation, grief, and depression.

  • Instill hope.

Suggested scriptures: Psalms 37:3-7; Lamentations 3:24-26
