Prevalence: Males
Signs and symptoms:

Usual treatment:
- Medication (Viagra-to dilate the artery that supplies blood to penis, thereby facilitating erection)
- Counseling
- Surgery (installation of penile prosthesis)
- Blood is drawn into penis by the use of vacuum
Usual course: Varies. When erectile dysfunction accompanies certain diseases, it is often permanent. Viagra has offered new hope and helps many men achieve erection. Certain medications can cause impotence; when these medications are discontinued, erection is restored. Treatment of any existing prostate infections may also improve erectile dysfunction.
Spiritual considerations:
- Loss and grief can have a devastating effect on the sexual desire and the erectile ability of the male. Impotence, in turn, can bring on anxiety which further complicates the impotence. Encourage person to explore feelings associated with this condition.
