Human Immunodeficiency Virus/Acquired Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV/AIDs) 
Description: AIDS refers to the active disease caused by the HIV virus. It is important to know that you can have HIV without having AIDS. Requiring body fluid to body fluid contact for transmission, HIV/AIDS is a blood-borne virus. AIDS destroys the immune system at the cellular level, leaving the bodies of those infected weakened and susceptible to life-treating infections.
Incidence: Not uncommon (nearly two million people infected in US; seventy million people infected worldwide)
Prevalence: Males (though the number of infected females is increasing)
Signs and symptoms:
  • HIV
  • Fatigue
  • Swollen lymph glands
  • Fever
  • Night sweats
  • Rapid weight loss
  • Dry cough
  • Diarrhea lasting more than one week
  • White spots on tongue, mouth, throat
  • Blotches (red, brown, pink, or purplish) on or under skin
  • Pneumonia
  • Memory loss
  • Depression
Risk factors:
  • Unprotected sex with person that is HIV positive
  • Unprotected sex with multiple partners
  • Sharing contaminated needles with IV drug use
  • Received blood transfusion prior o 1985
  • Newborn and nursing infants of HIV-positive mother
Usual treatment:
  • Medication (antiretroviral drugs)
  • Positive self-care
Usual course: Long-term with no cure
Spiritual considerations:
  • Be sensitive to crisis points with this condition, including time of diagnosis, status change to AIDS, and approaching death
  • Encourage open discussion of feelings and fears
  • Promote support system
  • Instill hope
