Heart Attack
Description: Impaired circulation to the heart muscle due to blockage of one or more of the arteries that supplies the heart muscle. When this occurs, blood cannot get to the area supplied by this artery, and the heart muscle dies.
Incidence: Not uncommon (600 per 100,000 in the US)
Prevalence: Males more than females until age seventy, then equal
Signs and symptoms:
- Crushing chest pain
- Pain that radiates to the jaw or shoulder
- Squeezing, heavy feeling in the chest
- Complaint of bad indigestion (especially seen in the elderly)
- Sweating
- Pale skin
- Nausea, vomiting
- Dizziness
Risk factors:
- High cholesterol
- Sedentary lifestyle
- Stress
- Heredity
- Obestiy
- Smoking
- High blood pressure

- Diabetes
Usual Treatment:
- Medications (to lower cholesterol, control high blood pressure, dilate arteries to the heart, prevent and dissolve clots, reduce the heart workload)
- Angioplasty and/or surgery if indicated
- Lifestyle changes
- Cardiac rehabilitation
Usual course: The event occurs suddenly with sudden death (cardiac arrest) in about twenty-five percent of cases. With procedures to restore circulation to the heart (bypasses or angioplasty), recovery is rapid, usually within two weeks. However, months of cardiac rehabilitation are recommended.
Spiritual Considerations:
Denial of the condition is common during a heart attack
Physical presence and good listening skills may help allay common fears.
If heart surgery is indicated, fear of death is often present
