Guillian Barre’ Syndrome (GBS)
Description: A neurological disease characterized by progressive, symmetrical paralysis beginning beginning with the lower body; caused by inflammation and damage to the peripheral nerves; it usually begins 1-3 weeks after an infection, surgery, or an immunization.
Incidence: 1.7 in 100,000 (mortality rate about five percent)
Prevalence: Males and females equal; affect people of all ages and ethnic backgrounds
Signs and symptoms:
- Fatigue
- Weakness that leads to paralysis
- Weakness moving symmetrically up from the feet
- Abnormal feelings in the arms, legs, or face
- Rapid onset of symptoms
- Elevated protein levels in the spinal fluid
- Decreased reflexes as the disease progresses
Risk factors:
- History of an illness with a temperature one to three weeks before
- Has been known to occur after the flu vaccine or other immunizations
Usual Treatment:
- Medications (daily IV immune globulin)
- Plasmapheresis (“washing” the blood to get rid of antibodies)
Usual course: Rapid onset and progression that are a medical emergency; impaired breathing can be fatal; after the acute phase, symptoms plateau, followed by a prolonged recovery phase which leaves disabling effects (in thirty percent of cases).
Spiritual Considerations:
· Fear and anxiety are common during diagnostic time.
· Plasmapheresis treatments may be difficult and elicit fears of death
· Persons may be completely paralyzed and dependent in the acute phase
· Strengthen the spiritual network for the person and surround him/her with prayer
Suggested scriptures: Isaiah 26:3-4; Proverbs 3:5-6
