Grave’s Disease (Hyperthyrodism)
Description: Grave’s disease, the most common form of hyperthyroidism in people under 40, is a condition in which the thyroid gland produces too much thyroid hormone. (Other, milder forms of hyperthyroidism, can occur.) As a result, the body speeds up, producing the classic symptoms of hyperthyroidism.
Incidence: Common-two percent of all women in the US
Prevalence: Females
Signs and symptoms:
  • Weight loss
  • Muscle weakness
  • Irritability
  • Increased heart rate
  • Nervousness
  • Shaky hands
  • Hair loss
  • Protruding eyeballs
  • Increase sweating
  • Increased bowel movements
  • Decreased menstrual flow
Risk factors:
  • Female gender
  • Heredity
  •  Age (twenty to forty years of age)
Usual treatment:
  • Radioactive iodine medication
  • Medication (antithyroid drugs)
  • Surgery to remove thyroid gland
Usual course: Short (terminated by treatment)
Spiritual considerations:
  • Encourage the person to explore feelings associated with this condition.
  • Use of coping strategies such as prayer, medication, and relaxation can help to decrease stress.
