The most common location for this is to occur is in the Fallopian tubes, though it may implant in the abdomen, outside the uterus, or an ovary. Signs and symptoms:
- Early signs of pregnancy (breast tenderness, nausea, missed period)
- Irregular vaginal bleeding
- Lower abdominal pain, usually on one side
- Rupture with bleeding inside the abdomen
- May progress to severe pelvic pain, shoulder pain, nausea,

Risk factors:
- Previous ectopic pregnancy

- Smoking
- Damaged fallopian tubes (including previous tubal surgery)
Usual treatment:
- Surgery
- Medication (methotrexate for six weeks)
Usual course: This condition occurs early in pregnancy, usually with in the initial four to six weeks and often before pregnancy has been diagnosed. Irregular vaginal bleeding may occur first, but it is the appearance of abdominal pain that indicates the presence of the problem. The condition ends when the diagnosis is made and appropriate treatment (usually surgery) is instituted, but the emotional effects may linger.
Spiritual considerations:
- Acknowledge loss and allow the natural course of the grieving process for both partners.
- Encourage the use of coping strategies such as prayer, meditation, and relaxation.
