Eating Disorders
Description: A group of conditions characterized by disturbances in eating behavior that may include frequent overeating (binging0, fasting, severe dieting, self-induced vomiting, laxative and diuretic use, and excessive exercise. Those affected are obsessively concerned with body weight.
Incidence: Fairly common (one to four percent of the American population; up to fifteen percent of high school girls in US; five million Americans)+
Prevalence: Females
Signs and symptoms:
  • Anorexia or bulimia
  • Significant weight loss
  • Extreme concern about weight
  • Denial of hunger, body weight and image
  • Missing periods
  • Eating large amounts of food
  • Trips to the bathroom after meals
  • Vomiting to purge food
  • Use of laxatives
  • Excessive exercise
  • Loss of enamel on teeth
  • Altered eating habits
Risk factors:
  • Age (increases at puberty)
  • Female gender
  • Family dynamics
  • Heredity
  • Emotional disorders
  • Extreme exercise programs
Usual treatment:
  • Hospitalization may be required
  • Psychotherapy
  • Family therapy
  • Educational groups
  • Medication (antidepressants)
Usual course: Varies, though often long term
Spiritual considerations:
  • Personal and family denial of the condition is common.
  • Issues of control and powerlessness are often central
  • Eating disorders can be life–threatening (a five percent mortality rate is associated with anorexia nervosa)
  • The long term nature of eating disorders may require sustained spiritual and emotional support.
