Depression
Description: Depression is a psychological condition that affects your mood, feelings, behavior, and physical health. It is characterized by chronic sadness.
Incidence: Common (one of 8; seven to twelve percent of men and twenty to thirty percent of women in America; 11.5 million cases per year)
Prevalence: Females
Signs and symptoms:
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in everyday activities
  • Ongoing sadness
  • Sleep Problems
  • Impaired thinking or concentration
  • Significant weight loss or gain
  • Irritation or slowing of body movements
  • Tiredness
  • Focus on aches and pains
  • Loss of interest in sex
  • Negative view of future; hopelessness
  • Thoughts of death or suicide
  • Frequent crying
Risk factors:
  • Heredity
  • All ages and races
  • Old age
  • Lack of social support
  • Divorced or single
  • Women (hormonal changes, problems with neurotransmitters)
  • Stressful life events
  • Personal history of sexual abuse
  • Substance abuse
Usual treatment:
  • Medication
  • Psychotherapy, especially cognitive therapy
  • Light therapy
  • Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT)
  • Complementary alternative medication
Usual course: Varies, can be chronic
Spiritual considerations:
  • There is an increased risk of suicide (and homicide).
  • Depression can be confused with reactions of grief.
  • Address feelings of helplessness and hopelessness.
  • The person may consider him or herself unworthy of attention from the congregational staff member who gives it.
