Risk factors:

Usual treatment:
- Medication (for reducing inflammation)
- Surgery
- Ongoing monitoring
Usual course: The symptoms usually appear and then become chronic; however, the onset may be sudden, with pain in the abdomen suggesting appendicitis. Although spontaneous remission or medical therapy may result in a prolonged time with no symptoms, cure of the disease is rare. Intermittent exacerbations are usual, but disease-related mortality is rare. Intermittent exacerbations are usual, but disease-related mortality is rare. People with Crohn’s disease of the small bowel are at greater risk for small bowel cancer.
Spiritual considerations:
- Because this is a chronic disorder, strengthen social and spiritual support networks.
- Be aware that a person with this disorder may undergo numerous surgeries throughout the course of the disease. Have a plan to assist the person and family during these times, and plan for hospital visits.
