Chemical Dependency and Drug Addiction
Description: The continued use of drugs or alcohol, including prescription medications, despite negative consequences- emotional, physical, social, and spiritual. May involve physical and emotional dependence as well as a negative experience if drug or alcohol is withdrawn.
Incidence: Common (14,8 million Americans use illicit drugs; 8.2 million Americans are chemically dependent or use alcohol)
Prevalence: occurs in males and females in equal numbers
Signs and symptoms:
  • Craving drugs or alcohol daily
  • Overwhelmed by life situations
  • Unable to stop drug or alcohol use
  • Answer “yes” to two or more questions in CAGE self assessment tool (see page 206), Congregational Health, “How to Make Your Congregation a Health-Aware Community.”
Risk factors:
  • Heredity
  • Depression
  • Learning experiences
  • Stress
  • Perr pressure
  • Poor academic achievement
  • Chaotic home environment
  • Poor social coping skills
Usual treatment:
  • Detoxification (elimination of chemical[s] in the body’s system)
  • Counseling
  • Behavioral medication
  • Self-help group
  • Medications
Usual course: Varies
Spiritual considerations:
  • Denial that a problem exists is extremely common
  • Relapses are to expected
  • Addiction affects the entire family
  • Instill hope that through belief in God, the person has the power to overcome addiction.
