Cerebral Palsy (CP)
 
Description: Motor disorders characterized by impaired voluntary movement caused by injury to the brain (resulting from lack of oxygen) of an infant or child, before, after, or during the birth process.
 
Incidence: 2.1 per 1,000 live births
 
Prevalence:  Males equally with females
 
Signs and symptoms:
  • Varies depending on type
  • Floppiness
  • Spastic muscles
  • May have normal intelligence or some mental retardation
Risk factors: 
  • Problems during mother’s pregnancy or at delivery
Usual Treatment:
  • Therapy (intense physical, occupational and speech therapy); monitoring throughout life for complications
Usual course: A chronic problem but not progressive; may result in significant disability
 
Spiritual Considerations: 
  • Parents
  • Some children will be wheelchair bound. Mental retardation can occur with CP as well. Educate the faith community about the disease and special needs of the child
  • Provide hope that this is not a progressive disease and that therapy has shown to improve function over time
  • of children who have CP will need continued emotional and spiritual support
