Cancer
Description: Cancer is really a group of diseases characterized by the growth of abnormal cells. As cancer cells accumulate, they form tumors. Not only can these tumors invade healthy tissues, they can also secrete enzymes or hormones that impair the body’s function. Metastasis refers to the process by which cancer cells spread from the original site to other parts of the body.
Incidence: Common (nine million Americans)
Prevalence: Varies with type of cancer: females have a one in three lifetime risk of developing cancer (lung, breast, colon, and rectum); males have a one in two lifetime risk of developing cancer (lung, prostate, colon and rectum, pancreas, stomach, liver)
Signs and symptoms:
  • Varies with form of cancer, but may include:
  • Lump of thickening in breast or other body part
  • Unusual bleeding or discharge
  • Change in bowel or bladder habits
  • A sore throat that does not heal
  • Nagging cough or hoarseness
  • Indigestion or difficulty swallowing
  • An obvious change in a mole or wart
Risk factors:
  • Heredity
  • Age
  • Race
  • Environmental factors:
  • Smoking (especially lung, cancers of the mouth, pancreatic, bladder, cervical)
  • Diet
  • Infectious disease
  • Chemicals
  • Radiation
Usual treatment:
  • Surgery
  • Radiation
  • Chemotherapy
  • Hormonal therapy
  • Immunotherapy
Usual course: Varies with the type and stage of cancer, the effectiveness of treatment, as well as patient’s age and general health status.
Spiritual considerations:
  • Instill hope.
  • Allow the person to share feelings that may include shock, fear, sadness, guilt, hopelessness, and helplessness.
  • Be attentive to suggestions of suicidal thoughts.
  • Be aware that a diagnosis of cancer affects the entire family.
