Bronchitis
Description: Inflammation of the airways and lungs due to an infection; can be acute or chronic
Incidence: Common; more common in smokers and those with allergies that have large amounts of lung mucus
Prevalence: Males equally with females; all age groups; chronic type is more common among the elderly
Signs and symptoms:
- Cough (with sputum)
- Fever
- Aching
- Fatigue
- Chest congestion
Risk factors:

Chronic lung disease

Very young and very old

Smoking
-
Alcoholism
-
Allergies
-
Air pollution
-
Sinus infections
Usual Treatment:
-
Rest
-
Drink plenty of fluids until fever is gone

Medications (antibiotics are given when the sputum is yellow)

Lifestyle changes (stop smoking; restrict alcohol; control risk factors)

Evaluation for allergies
Usual course: In acute type, good prognosis with proper treatment; in chronic type, can be serious and recurring
Spiritual Considerations:

If acute, provide care and comfort. Give reassurance that treatment will ease the symptoms and speed recovery.
