Bipolar Disorder (Manic Depressive Illness)
Description: Bipolar disorder is a psychological condition that affects mood, feelings, behavior, and physical health. It is charactereized by dramatice mood swings from overly “high” to sad and hopeless.
Incidence: Uncommon (.6 percent to .88 percent of population; two million Americans)
Prevalence: Females
Signs and symptoms:
  • Elevated, expansive or overly good mood
  • Irritability
  • Inflated self-esteem
  • Racing thoughts
  • Sleep disturbances, little sleep
  • Inadequate nutrition and weight loss
  • Poor judgment
  • Distractible
  • Impaired thinking
  • Aggressiveness
  • Hyperactivity and increased motor activity
  • Excess of all kinds: spending, activity, verbosity, drugs
  • Rapid, pressured speech
Risk factors:
  • Heredity
  • Stress
  • Personality
  • Female gender
  • Family history of bipolar disorder
Usual treatment:
  • Medication
  • Psycho education
  • Cognitive behavior therapy
Usual course: Often a chronic condition.
Spiritual considerations:
  • Severe ad persistent nature of this illness affects every aspect of the person’s life.
  • Encourage the person to take medication as prescribed.
  • Instill hope
