Atherosclerosis (commonly called hardening of the Arteries)
Description: A form of cholesterol invades the walls of the arteries due to excessive amounts of it in the blood. It damages the blood vessel walls as it builds up, forming plaques that will look like flaking paint. Continued buildup can eventually impair blood flow at narrowed places in the arteries, even to the point of total obstruction of some of the vessels.
Incidence: Common
Prevalence: Males more than females until menopause, then about equal
Signs and symptoms: Usually no observable symptoms until a vessel is narrowed or blocked by a clot, then symptoms vary depending on where the vessel is blocked (i.e., brain = signs of stroke; heart = signs of myocardial infarction)
Risk factors:
- Hypertension
- Smoking
- Diabetes
- Obesity
- Advanced age
- Family history
- Sedentary lifestyle
- High fat diet
- High cholesterol
- Male gender
Usual Treatment:
- Lifestyle changes (low fat diet and other dietary controls; increase physical fitness; stop smoking; restrict alcohol intake)
- Medications to lower cholesterol
Usual course: Avoiding risk factors and taking medications, along with exercise, can greatly reduce chance of death related to this disorder
Spiritual Considerations:
- This is a long-term problem for many people, especially older men. Take time to listen to their concerns.
- Encourage compliance with the treatment plan.
- Consider starting an exercise group or have a dietician come to talk with your Seniors in order to emphasize prevention. Take a proactive approach.
