Timely Topics:

Here's how to fight the "flu"...

Use this guide to discover the most common causes of the most common symptoms for your illnesses...

Asthma

Description: A disorder in which airflow is obstructed in the small airways of the lung from spasm of the muscles in the lung walls, causing them to become smaller in caliber and limit the passage of air. Wheezing is characteristic of this disorder, because air can get in better than it can get out. Asthma is thought to be an inflammatory response that may be triggered by allergies (to molds, dust, animal dander, feather pillows), smoke, infections, exercise, or stress.

Incidence: Common (ten million new cases per year; seven to nineteen percent of those cases are in children)

Prevalence: More common in children and young adults, but may occur at any age; males more than females until puberty, then about equal; if onset is in adult years, females more common than males

Signs and symptoms:
  • Wheezing
  • Cough
  • Increased heart rate
  • Struggling to breathe
  • Attacks and remissions
Risk factors:
  • Family history
  • Viral respiratory infections in infancy
Usual treatment:
  • Medications (to reduced inflammation and open the airways—often including inhaler for regular use)
  • Eliminate the sources that trigger reactions
Usual course: Asthma is usually a lifelong illness. The incidence and severity of the attacks vary. When attacks are severe, seek medical attention as soon as possible.

Spiritual Considerations:
  • Flare-ups can be a medical emergency.
  • Have a plan for your congregation to follow in the case of asthma attacks, which can be life-threatening in some people.
  • During an episode, remain with the person and help him or her stay calm.
Suggested scriptures: Isaiah 12: 2; Acts 17: 24--28
